The Best Food for your Large-breed Puppy
Thursday, February 9th, 2012There are some things that you should pay attention to when choosing the right food for your beloved puppy. Large-breed puppies have particular nutritional needs because of their fast growth in size and weight.
For a large-breed puppy like a Mastiff, Great Dane, Irish Wolfhound, Golden Retriever, German Shepherd, among others, you have to ensure that you are feeding her a natural puppy food particularly designed for large-breed puppies.
These puppies can grow extremely rapid that is why their growth needs to be regulated for them to develop properly.
A quality large-breed puppy food is designed to control growth rates while providing the nutritional support that the puppies need for proper muscular and skeletal development.
A number of excellent dog food companies (Innova, Orijen, Wellness, et al.) make high quality large-breed puppy foods in both canned and kibble variations. The perfect large-breed puppy food contains just the right amounts and balance of protein, phosphorus, calcium and fat to promote proper bone formation, alongside glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate for healthy joints despite the stress brought about by a large puppy’s weight. It should also consist of all the other ingredients needed by every puppy to develop properly.
As with adult dog food, the price of higher quality puppy dog food is more costly. “Deals” are most likely non-existent for puppy food, except for the occasional sales and the coupons you can use if applicable.
Try to stay away from the cheapest, highly discounted puppy foods. There’s a reason they’re priced that way, and it isn’t anything good. The cheapest deal is definitely not going to get you the best large-breed puppy food.
When we consider the three types of puppy food formulations (dry, wet and semi-moist), both dry puppy food (kibble) and wet puppy food (cans or tins) are fine to feed your puppy. But please avoid semi-moist puppy foods. Unfortunately, although many dogs love it, most semi-moist dog foods are loaded with artificial chemicals, dyes and other additives.
